Troubleshooting Your Air Conditioner Noises

The newer your model of air conditioner, the more silently it should run. However, if you have had your air conditioner for years, you know what air conditioner noises it should be making during normal operation. If your air conditioner is making a sound outside of that normal, you may be able to get a good idea of what is wrong based on the sound itself.

Troubleshooting Your Air Conditioner Noises

Banging / Rattling

A banging sound from inside your AC unit is almost always indicative of a part that has come loose. The loose part is moving due to the natural vibration and making a noise. In some cases, it can be something as small as a connecting rod or a screw. However, as this unnatural motion can cause damage over time to even small parts, it should not be ignored.

Clicking

A clicking noise in your air conditioner is typically the sign of an incoming electrical issue. You may notice clicking before a control or a thermostat in your air conditioner fails. This means that it is likely that you will soon see your air conditioner fail to cool your home very soon.

Squealing

A squealing air conditioner is perhaps the most dramatic and annoying noise it can make. However, in most cases, the problem isn’t as dramatic. If you neglect seasonal maintenance, squealing could be caused by a lack of lubrication. However, if your blower fan or motor is going bad, it could cause this sound as well.
